ON THIS DAY: Atherton’s steel against white lightning Donald

ON THIS DAY in 1998, one of the fiercest battles in modern Test history took place, as Mike Atherton had to face up to a ferocious spell from South Africa’s Allan Donald.

At Edgbaston in the fourth Test of that series’, Nasser Hussain was dropped by keeper Mark Boucher. Furious, Donald pumped himself up, and delivered an unrelentingly aggressive spell at England’s opening batsman during the fourth innings chase.

Atherton stood firm in the fourth innings despite the barrage, scoring 98* off 277 to help England win by eight wickets.
