ON THIS DAY: Pakistan’s miracle chase in the desert

On this day last year, Pakistan pulled off one of the most miraculous and record breaking Test match victories, arguably in history.

Playing Sri Lanka at Sharjah, U.A.E., Pakistan were set a highly improbable 302 to win the game, in the last two sessions of the day. It was going to be a draw by all orthodoxy, and the commentators were saying it would need a miracle.

One thing all cricket learn rapidly, is that Pakistan cricket is not orthodox. It is extra-ordinary in many ways.

The managed to do it.

They smashed 197 runs in the final session of the day, completing an incredible win in 57.3 overs, with a run rate of 5.25 an over, which is a record for the quickest run chase, ever.

They won the Test thanks to a mature 103 from 137 from Azhar Ali, 48 from 46 from Sarfraz Ahmed and a sturdy 68 from 72 from Captain Misbah. In doing so, they achieved a series result of 1-1.
