Ramranesh Sarwan has been recalled to the West Indies squad for their 5 match One Day International Squad for their series in Australia. He replaces Marlon Samuels who was struck on the eye by a Lasith Malinga delivery in the big bash.

The 32 year old Guyanese batsmen has nearly 6000 test runs and 15 test centuries. Sarwan also averages 43 in ODI cricket with over 5600 runs. Sarwan last represented the West Indies in June-July 2011 after he came into conflict with the West Indies managers and was both dropped from all forms of cricket, in addition to losing his central contract  Since having been dropped.

He was said to be mentally effected by his conflict with the board, in addition to his game suffering heavily. “I never spoke about this because I was caught up in a shell and I used to not come out of my house for up to three days.””

Since being dropped, Sarwan has been fantastic for English county side Leicestershire. He has struck 941 runs at 40.91 in the first class competition.

After playing for Leicestershire Sarwan stated; “Now I’m much better, more precise with my movements, everything crystal clear in my head.”  However, his recent form in the T20 competition in the Carribean is  weak with scores of 8, 1, 2 and 7 in four matches for Guyana.

On the one hand, Sarwan will offer experience and quality to a strong West Indies side, and he will hopefully once more establish himself in the test side.

If Sarwan is able to consolidate himself back in the West Indies side for any format, there may be complications with Leicestershire, the county of which he has been playing for regularly, and has now been offered the captaincy, assuming it from former England bowler Matthew Hoggard. Sarwan may have to in the future decide his future, between the national side, perhaps via a central contract, and the Leicestershire role. There may of course not be a conflict.

WI Squad for the ODI series to Australia :  Darren Sammy (capt), Dwayne Bravo, Tino Best, Darren Bravo, Johnson Charles, Narsingh Deonarine, Chris Gayle, Jason Holder, Sunil Narine, Kieron Pollard, Kieran Powell, Kemar Roach, Andre Russell, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Devon Thomas
